Kereru NZ pigeon

Kereru at birdbath

For the past month or two we’ve had regular visits from kereru (NZ pigeon) in the garden as they feed on guava and tree privet fruit in neighbouring gardens. Both of these, but particularly privet, are pretty bad weeds when the birds carry their seed into the bush and countryside but the birds do love ’em. It raises the old question of attracting birds into your garden versus what’s probably best for the local environment.Still it’s nice seeing the kereru. This one came into my birdbath just outside the window – the photo is taken through glass with the camera at arms length so the kereru couldn’t see me. It still took off when the (digital) shutter clicked. Obviously good hearing.
