My sunflowers are well over and their seeds are now being rapidly eaten by a few greenfinches and a small group of house sparrows. The sparrows don’t seem to be as good at extracting seeds from the flower heads and spend a lot of their time on the ground below eating crumbs. I’ve now started putting out bought sunflower seed on a dish in the hope of keeping the greenfinches coming for longer. It is working although the sparrows eat the majority. Even so, I think I’ll make a permanent feeder just to keep the greenfinches happy.
