Last summer I had good crops of zinnias and sunflowers which provided autumn seed for goldfinches and greenfinches in my garden. Chaffinches also love sunflower seed but for some reason didn’t take them directly from my plants. I didn’t grow zinnias this year but the sunflowers are looking great right now. Rather than harvest the seed and feed it out I simply leave the plants in place and as they ripen the birds find them.  I have a feeling my daughter’s budgies are eyeing up the sunflowers too so there could be exciting times ahead.
