Back in March I wrote about the dredging of my local pond fully expecting that the resident pair of black swans and a recently arrived Australian coot would abandon the place. Well the swans didn’t take very long before they returned. On 15th August they had four recently hatched cygnets.
Exactly a month later and the four are much bigger and doing well.
My other surprise was to find that the coot has also returned and if we’re lucky there is a mate on a nest somewhere (both sexes incubate). So after being quite pessimistic about the state of the pond six months ago I’m now full of spring hope for its future.
