Tawharanui robin springtime

I’ve been up checking the Tawharanui robins to see if they’re starting nesting yet. The first pairs are usually under way around the beginning of September. During the winter male and female have very little to do with each other. If I feed them mealworms the male will eat them and usually chase the female away. But when spring arrives he starts to feel a little more cuddly. This male collected the mealworms I threw him and fed them (tentatively) to the female which shows nesting isn’t far away. In the little clip here you’ll see him flirting with her a bit too but she’s not all that interested. I don’t blame her when he’s been so horrible to her all winter.
