Every winter for years now a kingfisher (Halcyon sancta – lovely name) comes into our garden to eat earthworms. I’d love to know if it’s been the same bird returning each year. It’s there most days, sitting watching the lawn for any action. Then it darts down, and arrives back on the perch with a worm, sometimes battering it on a branch if it’s a particularly large one. Our sheltered garden is quite a different habitat from the coastline a hundred meters away where it must do most of its feeding (on small crabs). Oddly my mind struggles to think of the kingfisher as a garden bird at all.
