A Goldfinch in My Zinnias

Goldfinch in zinnias

I’ve at last had my camera near me when a goldfinch has been feeding on zinnia seeds just outside my kitchen window. For a few days there was an adult with two juveniles following its every move. That was two weeks ago. Now I’m only getting a single bird which, although in adult plumage, has a very sketchily red face. With the breeding season now at an end goldfinches will start to gather in flocks, often with sparrows or other finches. So by the time the seeds on my liquidamber tree are ripe in autumn/winter I will get small flocks of finches, rather than just this lonely one, feeding in my front garden.
