Sand dune cicada and NZ dotterel

Sand dune cicada Shsp

Visited Shakespear Park again on Friday to see if sand dune cicadas are still singing and found there is at least this one. I don’t know if he’ll still be there today after Cyclone Pam went through last night, though I guess they’re used to strong wind living as they do on exposed coastal dunes. While searching along the dunes this NZ dotterel landed in front of us. She didn’t quite spread out her beach towel but these birds seem much less worried by people than they used to.

Great photo with the beach umbrella – and loved the ‘didn’t quite spread out her beach towel’ comment. Great cover photo too – the bird on the right looks like it has just said something mean to the one on the left. 🙂 Good stuff!
