Kingfisher nest

Kingfisher nest 2 Kingfisher nest 1

It wasn’t easy at first to see where the growling of the kingfisher chicks was coming from but the white stain below the nest hole gave it away. Judging from the volume they must have been already quite old and will have fledged by now (fledge at 26 days). I was amused to read in the Heather and Robertson Field Guide that to begin building a nest hole such as this “they sit on a branch … several meters from the site and fly straight at it, neck outstretched and making a peculiar whirring call, and strike it forcefully with the bill tip”. I’m not surprised they make peculiar noises!
