Today we had a family hunting trip to Tawharanui to see if we could find the little sand dune cicada (Rhodopsalta leptomera) and as you can see we met with success. They are found most commonly on the west coast but are also at Tawharanui on the east. They were also found further south, on the Hibiscus Coast, but seem to have disappeared from there between the 1970s and the present. I’d searched the Tawharanui sand dunes before without success but it turns out my hearing is not good enough for their quiet, high-pitched song. Hence taking the family this time as my ears.
